ALSCON Kick-Starts One Laptop Per Child
Project

UC RUSAL, the world's largest
aluminium and alumina producer, announces the deployment of
over 700 XO laptops in ALSCON Staff Schools in Akwa Ibom,
where RUSAL's Nigerian-based smelter is located. This
initiative is part of One Laptop Per Child project (OLPC) in
Nigeria supported by RUSAL within the framework of the
company's comprehensive social investment programme in the
Niger Delta region.
OLPC is an educational programme which involves an
innovative application of cutting edge learning techniques
in empowering children in their learning. The laptop is
designed to enhance collaborative, joyful and self-empowered
learning. Thus, they can be used to enhance all aspects of
the children's education such as mathematics, science and
technology, art and design and musical composition, among
other capabilities. Plans are also underway to deploy the
laptops in the neighbouring clans in Ikot Abasi and some
schools in Mkpat Enin, Opobo, and Eastern Obolo Local
Government Areas. The XO laptops had earlier been deployed
in Rivers and Bayelsa States.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Acting Managing Director Mr.
Andrey Terentyev said, “The OLPC initiative is a key
demonstration of the importance the company attaches to
investment in the education of our staff children and
overall capacity building in the surrounding communities and
the Niger Delta region. We believe by creating better
conditions for the children we are investing in the
potential employees of our company”.
About OLPC project in Nigeria
One Laptop Per Child developed the rugged, low-cost and low
power laptop with content and software designed for
collaborative, joyful and self-empowered learning to help
children explore, experiment and express themselves. With
RUSAL's support the 6,000 XO laptops will be distributed in
the OLPC project in Nigeria with schlumberger Nigeria, SEED
responsible for know how in building the learning
environment and methodologies using new technologies and
also coordinating the project.
