ECEWS Donates Educational Materials to
Schools

A non-governmental organization,
known as Excellence Community Education Welfare Scheme (ECEWS)
has donated educational materials worth thousands of naira
through Akwa Ibom State Ministry of Education to schools in
the state on Thursday, March 4, 2010 at the Conference Hall
of the State Secretariat Complex.
The educational materials which comprise of essential
literature, story books and fictions with stipulated titles
in the approved list of books by the Akwa Ibom State
Ministry of Education are for 30 primary schools' and 20
secondary schools' libraries respectively.
Presenting the books on behalf of the organization, the
Executive Director of the body, Mr. Andy Eyo said that apart
from donating books to support the free and compulsory
education policy of the Akwa Ibom State government, ECEWS in
collaboration with the Centre for Disease Control and
Prevention, funded under the United States President's
Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PREFAR) also intervened to
reverse the trend of HIV/AIDS in Nigeria.
Mr. Eyo opined that ECEWS is currently providing health care
services including free drugs, long lasting insecticide
treated nets, safe water options, supplemental feeding and
psychological support to over 2000 orphans in 21 local
government areas in the state.
He said that for the educational support, the group was
donating about 150,000 copies of library materials to the
selected schools across the state.
Receiving the materials, the Akwa Ibom State commissioner
for Education, Dr. NseAbasi Akpan commended ECEWS for
supporting the educational policies of the state government
through the donation of reading materials to schools.
Dr. Akpan who was represented by the information officer in
the Ministry, Mr. Effiong Asian, informed ECEWS that the
Ministry (Education) has done a lot to upgrade the standard
of education in the state, noting that with the state
governor, Chief Godswill Akpabio, education has been given a
face-lift through massive renovation, and rehabilitation of
schools.
He urged other non-governmental organizations and well
meaning individuals to emulate the kind gesture of ECEWS by
donating reading and writing materials to schools.
In his goodwill message, the National Vice Chairman,
National Parent's Teachers Association, Etubom Jerry Emah
thanked ECEWS for supporting the elevation of educational
development of the children and decried the poor state of
library and sporting facilities in public schools as
compared to some private schools, stressing that ECEWS
donation would likely enhance library standards in schools.
The Chairman of the occasion and Chairman, Akwa Ibom State
Action Committee on AIDS (AKSACA), Dr. Martins Akpan
appreciated the State Government for the introduction of
free and compulsory education which has awakened the
consciousness in the people and called on all to join hands
with government to ensure that the people's policy is
successful.
Dr. Akpan said that people oriented projects such as
donation of books and other educational projects need the
total support of all, emphasizing “in our programme we
consider orphans and vulnerable children as a special class
of people who need special attention, care and support which
include HIV/AIDS, HIV positive children, children affected
by HIV/AIDS and others. Comments
