Physically Challenged persons in the state recently smiled home with brand new laptops, bags of rice, cash, and scholarship awards to study in institutions of higher learning courtesy of Obong Friday A. Etuk, the Managing Director, Assur Investment Limited, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
The business tycoon made the presentation of these packages to the physically challenged persons during the finals of the Assur Unity Cup, which took place recently at the Asuna Community Secondary School, in Etinan Local Government Area.
Making the presentation, Dr. Etuk said the empowerment scheme was purely philanthropic gesture and that it was targeted at creating an atmosphere of unity and recreation among the people of Akwa Ibom State.
He noted that in 2008, the empowerment scheme was directed towards youths in tertiary institutions and that in 2006, Assur Investment presented computers and chairs to the Association of Physically Challenged persons in Akwa Ibom State.
His words; “In 2006 we presented computers and chairs to the Association of physically challenged persons in the state to furnish their office and in 2008, the empowerment programme was directed to youths in tertiary institutions, today we are presenting laptops, computers, instructional materials, scholarship awards, rice and cash to the physically challenged in the state, courtesy of, Assur Scholarship Foundation”. My involvement in these programmes is pure philanthropic, aimed at promoting unity; it's my belief that the Almighty God shall give us the ability to continue the programme as long as we live. To God be the glory!
Dr. Etuk further urged well placed individuals and the Federal Government to redirect their attention to the physically challenged persons in the society by initiating a well sustainable welfare scheme for them.
Also speaking, the Chairman, Assur Education Foundation, Dr. Jerry Emah, commended the facilitator of the scheme, Obong Friday Etuk, for sustaining the programme which started five years ago.
