BASSEDAS Soccer Championship
-As Sponsor Donates Borehole, Cash to
Winners

An Akwa Ibom-born Civil Engineer
and sponsor of the just concluded “Bassedas Cup
Championship” in Obot Akara Local Government Area, Obong
Engr. Charles Akpan, has donated a borehole and N250,000 in
scholarship to the Mega Stars Football Club of Mbat Esifon,
the winners of the soccer tournament. The finals of the
competition which took place Sunday, January 3, 2010, was
between mega stars FC and Great Lions of Ikot Udo, at St.
Theresa's Catholic School plays ground, Ikot Ukpong, was
watched by people in the area.
Addressing spectators, and football lovers who graced the
event, Engr. Charles stated that the essence of the
competition was to stimulate enthusiasm in sports, promote
development in the community, and select soccer talents, for
club sides within and outside the country. The Port
Harcourt-based engineer maintained that the competition
would be a yearly event in the area.
He charged the elders of the community to select those that
would benefit from the N250,000 scholarship scheme and
forward their names for appropriate action.
Obong Charles congratulated the winners of the year's
competition and cautioned them to keep the trophy safely and
to celebrate it to the glory of the Lord.
The engineer who was excited for the successful hosting of
the competition declared that he had a vision and that he
was very happy because the vision has metamorphosed into
something a lot of people will benefit from.
His words, “I initiated this tournament right from 2005
which was won by Nton Uno, and in 2007, I donated a borehole
to the winners, Mbat Esifon, and this year I will want to
promote the educational aspiration of the youth, and to do
this I have set aside N250,000 just to start the educational
empowerment for the community. The joy 1 derive from
sponsoring this competition arises from the fact that there
is total unity.
The tournament has brought in unity, peace and has also
exposed talents, we want to develop youths and also create
rooms for social development in the community; we will go
for challenge cup competition come October, 2010. I want to
sponsor those that are talented to play in the national
team, that's our goal; we want to attract national influence
to this area through sports”.
Engr. Charles Akpan used the opportunity to congratulate the
State Governor, Chief Godswill Akpabio, for the numerous
road projects going on in the state, saying that he has done
the entire people of the area proud.
He however urged him to focus on industrialization so as to
gainfully employ our youths, thus promoting human resource
development.
